Rescue Squad Celebrates Milestone, Honors Deputies Shot In The Line Of Duty

Image
L to R: Cpl. Kimber Gist, Chief Bill Salisbury and Captain Will Rogers (Now Retired) On Friday night, the Berkeley County Rescue Squad held its annual Christmas dinner at Wampee in Pinopolis. As always, the food was amazing. We also celebrated a huge milestone. It's hard to believe, but we've been in operation for 50 years now and still going strong. We hope to be around serving the community for many more years to come! In attendance at last night's dinner were also two very special guests: Cpl. Kimber Gist and Captain Will Rogers with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office. Both were shot in the line of duty nine months apart from one another. Kimber & Will share a hug. Chief Bill Salisbury and the rest of the rescue squad honored them both with the "Hero of the Year" award. "I was able to see, and stand beside Captain Will Rogers, whom I share a tragic and blessed event with. I cannot thank the citizens of Berkeley County enoug...

Berkeley Co. Rescue Squad Receives Grant for New Life Jackets

Image
Berkeley County rescue squad members pose with their new life vests The Berkeley County Rescue Squad is pleased to announce that it recently received a $2,300 grant from the Home Community Fund . Home Telecom created this kind and generous donation as a grant-making fund of Coastal Community Foundation to build a permanent charitable resource for selected non-profit programs in the company's service area. Every year, Berkeley County squad members (all volunteer) respond to approximately 100 emergency calls.  Many of those calls are water-related involving either search or recovery missions. Thanks to the generous funding by the grant committee, squad members were recently able to replace all of their old life jackets that were more than ten years old and showed obvious signs of wear and tear. Recently, Berkeley County Rescue Squad Chief Bill Salisbury used the money to locally purchase 20 new auto/manual inflatable life vests that are commonly used with many firs...

Berkeley Co. Rescue Squad, DNR respond to sinking boat, save 3 boaters

Image
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.--Shortly before 9 p.m.,  the Berkeley County Rescue Squad was dispatched to a sinking boat in the middle of Lake Moultrie. Also assisting in the search was the SC Dept. of Natural Resources. According to Chief Bill Salisbury, 40-year-old James Feagin; his son, 20-year-old Jessie Feagin; and 41-year-old James Garrett all of Moncks Corner were boating in the lake when a wave came into the boat, causing it to fill with water. Salisbury says they were able to grab life jackets before the boat sank. They were also able to call 9-1-1 and keep the cell phone above the water line and provide directions. The three were rescued by a DNR officer at 9:30 p.m. This is the second rescue in the last several weeks involving 3 people and a sinking boat. Salisbury says two things helped save the lives of these three people: life jackets and cell phones.
